New beam system makes Holtab’s technical buildings more flexible and lighter

By reviewing both design and material choices, Holtab has developed a new beam system for the floors of its technical buildings. The result is a lighter, stronger and more flexible solution that simplifies installation and work inside the station.

“Several departments have been involved in developing our technical buildings, and we are proud of what we have achieved together,” says Johan Malcolmsson, Production Engineer at Holtab.

For a 13.55-metre technical building with a standard switchgear configuration, the new beam system delivers a significant weight reduction. The floor structure has been reduced from approximately 1,500 kilos to around 900 kilos – roughly 40 per cent lighter than the previous solution.

“It creates benefits all the way from production and transport to on-site installation,“ says Johan.

At the same time, load-bearing capacity has increased. Despite using less material, the floor can withstand higher loads.

“The beams can be dismantled or lifted aside when needed, making installation smoother. Cable routing becomes easier and in many cases eliminates the need for permanent supports beneath the floor.“

Developed together

Work on the new floor structure began about a year ago and has been carried out in close collaboration between our development engineers and production. Around ten people have been involved in the development process.

“We have compared different alternatives and weighed the pros and cons. The goal has been to create a floor that is both stronger and more modular, without adding unnecessary material.“

The floor is stronger and more modular – without adding unnecessary material.

Improved working environment

The new beams are made from folded sheet metal instead of rolled steel – a thinner construction with greater strength. Reduced material usage combined with lower transport weight makes the solution more resource-efficient.

“All in all, this results in a lower carbon footprint, which we are very pleased with.“

The new floor structure is adapted for concrete foundations. The solution is already in operation in several stations and will gradually be implemented in upcoming projects.

The new type of floor is also easier for Holtab’s fitters to work with.

“The beams weigh less and can be handled without heavy lifting equipment. Being able to lift them aside when needed is a clear ergonomic improvement – both for us and for our customers. Last but not least, we have eliminated the use of nail guns in production, which represents a major step forward in terms of safety and the overall working environment,“ says Johan.

“Improving both the product and our own working environment feels extremely rewarding.“
