A Bright Idea on Sponsoring
Life in Jyamrung is much like how we lived in the Middle Ages. The homes have earthen floors, food is cooked over an open fire and daily life is dictated by sun-up and sun-down. To our ears, it may sound romantic. But there are a number of less attractive aspects. Many children are undernourished. Mothers give birth in their homes, without access to hot water or a warm bed. The cold is palpable and the poverty as dense as the darkness that consumes the village and stops activity in the early evening.
Holtab's goal was thereby a given: Jyamrung would have light, electricity and a sustainable future. But what may sound trivial here at home in Sweden is considerably more complicated in Nepal. The country is tormented by political disarray and severe corruption. And decades of dependency on international aid has undermined the country's self-esteem. Many well-intentioned aid initiatives have failed when the money ends up in the wrong pockets, and many large investments have degenerated and become unusable when the donors returned home.
The Holtab Model therefore focuses on personal responsibility, local cooperation and active participation of the local population.

In cooperation with Tuki Nepal
We cooperate with Tuki Nepal, whose project Build Up Nepal provides new life to dilapidated villages. This requires building with earthquake-resistant standards in poor areas, and, to reach this goal, long-term trust must be established with the ethnic groups that have been left to fend for themselves. Electricity creates new possibilities for developing the villages as it opens up to local companies and operations.
"Responsibility" is a guiding concept in our daily operations and permeates the entire project. On a local level and in very close cooperation with the village inhabitants, we take responsibility to develop a sustainable, long-term electrical system. Thereby, we lay an important, if not vital, foundation for local development and better living conditions.
We also prioritise sending our employees to Nepal to contribute on-site with their knowledge in electricity and power transmission, establish personal contacts and keep track of the project.
